The Sentencing Of Saddam Hussein

As a child, I heard his name mentioned time and time again in the news for having murdered, plundered and bombed cities I could not even name at that time. He was depicted in many editorial cartoons as the devil himself.

Anyway he was sentenced last Sunday to the death penalty by Iraq's High Tribunal for killing 148 Shiites in 1982. It was mentioned in Associated Press that if the verdicts and sentences are upheld, the executions must be carried out within 30 days.

It's funny that it took almost 30 years to determine guilt but only 30 days to implement punishment. I am not a fan of capital punishment but neither am I a fan of Saddam. But it's just dizzying how violence and killing just seems to beget itself.
